Professional biography

My main research interests focus on the processes playing a role in the formation and transformation of atmospheric aerosol, with particular emphasis on their interactions with trace gases and clouds. The processes modifying aerosol composition and size are responsible for the changes in properties that impact on their climatic impacts. Quantification of these processes is of critical importance to reduction in the uncertainty in the aerosol impacts on climate.

Researchers in my group participate in modelling, field and chamber experiment activities. Using a range of detailed process models to investigate aerosol properties and transformations in photochemical chamber and field experiments, some of our research areas include:

i) chamber investigations of secondary organic aerosol formation and transformation,

ii) measurements of aerosol water uptake in sub- and supersaturated conditions,

iii) modelling the behaviour of multicomponent inorganic / organic aerosol particles,

iv) laboratory measurements and prediction of fundamental properties of the components of aerosol particles,

v) so-called "closure" by reconciliation of measurements of a) aerosol water uptake in subsaturated and supersaturated conditions - hygroscopicity / CCN closure, b) aerosol composition and water uptake in subsaturated conditions - composition / hygroscopicity closure and c) aerosol composition and water uptake in supersaturated conditions - composition / CCN closure,

vi) field and modelling studies of the impacts of halogen activation from seasalt aerosol on the marine boundary layer photochemistry,

vii) field and modelling studies of the coastal formation of new ultrafine particles from the release of iodine compounds by tidal exposure of macroalgae,

viii) preparation of reduced and simplified descriptions of aerosol processes for inclusion in large-scale models

ix) inclusion of reduced and simplified descriptions of aerosol processes in large-scale models
